farming practices and management. also covered are issues we are often asked about organic farming. Click below to advance to the topic you are interested in.
Organic Farming go to top
Who is responsible for certifying your farm as organic?
The OCPP is our certifying agency. They are located in Ontario, Canada. For more information you may visit their website at www.ocpro.ca

How is the cropland treated differently in organic farming?
Absolutely no pesticides or herbicides can be used.  Only fertilizers from organic sources or naturally occurring in the earth can be used.  All products must be approved by the certifying agency.  There is a list that can be referred to as well.  The critical thing is to always contact the certifier if there is any question.

Can the consumer be sure that all things labeled “organic” are truly organic?
The USDA Organic label requires certain procedures to be followed and a chain of ownership of all inputs used to be maintained.  This process is very time consuming and fairly difficult to maintain (as we have had to change our record keeping to conform).  After keeping records for two years in this manner we have gained a respect for all organic produce.

Do you sell raw milk to individuals?
We've had a lot of requests for this and may consider a limited amount of this in the future. At the present time we have about all the work we can handle with our organic conversion process.
Manure Handling go to top

Do you apply the slurry or liquid manure?
The manure is separated into liquid and solid components.  The solids are currently applied as “aged manure” but we plan to compost at some point.  The liquid portion is applied to the pasture paddocks in the pasture season.  It is aerated and we will be adding bacteria inoculants so the smell is not nearly as offensive as what is customarily considered liquid manure.

Location of Property go to top

How do I find Kimvale Farm?
We are posted on Google Earth.  If you are in the Jamestown, NY area you can take Rt. 394 east through Falconer and about 5 miles east of Falconer take a left on Dry Brook road.  Kimvale Farm is 9/10 of a mile north on the right side of the road.

Care of Animals go to top

How do you care for and feed organic animals differently than conventional animals?
Absolutely no antibiotics or hormones are allowed.  The animals must be healthier and their diet must contain more trace elements than conventional animals.  Many homeopathic remedies are used.  We are still learning about much of this.

Recreational Use of Land go to top

Can I hunt, fish or trap on the property?
We do not post any of the land.  All of the above are acceptable but there are many fences that limit access.  We have started wiring some gates shut that are continually left open by recreational land users thus letting our cows out.  Please stop at the farm and talk to Steve or e-mail or call first.  Coyotes and woodchucks are always in season!

Can I hike, snowmobile, ride my horse, dirt bike or ATV on the property?
Please stop and ask Steve first.  Stay on the existing tractor drives or cow paths.  Leave all gates as you find them.  If you think you can’t shut a gate don’t open it.  Treat the acreage as if it was your front yard.

Employment at Kimvale go to top

Are you currently hiring new employees?
We are always looking for people who would have the same priorities toward the animals and the land that we do.

Other Questions go to top

Can I buy some cow manure for my garden or flower bed?
We always have separated manure available.  Bring your own containers.  We sometimes have a few used feed bags available.  We do not try to market it as it is needed for our crop production but many of our neighbors have found that it works well for them.
