Ellington has a rich tradition in its Town Picnic. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in the parade as an elected official for several years and in 2005 I had a team of oxen in the parade. I really believe when communities come together for social events such as this it leads to other good things such as the Ellington Arts Council.
The Farnam Library is a great example of a need the community supports. The bake sales and other fund raisers show the community is most definitely behind its library. The people involved in this effort have much to be proud of.
The Ellington Fire Department is another way that the people of Ellington put community service first. This organization has every right to be proud of the things they do to make our community a safer place to live in. Their Sunday chicken barbeque in the summer is excellent!
Another important issue for the Town is the Clear Creek Restoration Project. This is still in the development stage. Local people have got together to address a problem which is too big for any one landowner to tackle. With the help of government it can be remedied.
The dredge (known as the State Drainage Ditch) ends in Ellington. The Conewango Watershed Commission administers this project as well as the 20 dams in the watershed. At least three Ellington residents currently serve on that commission and others have served on it in the past. This is another example of local people working with state and county government to accomplish things that none of these levels of government could on their own. I marvel at the dedication and personal effort that these commissioners put into their two main projects. I am very proud to be associated with these people.
The leaders recognized a need to give Ellington a face lift and they approached CHRIC. Through this agency much has been done to improve the housing in Ellington. This is a great example of the leaders assessing a need and providing a workable solution.
I am very proud and honored to have been able to represent Ellington in Mayville and find there are still more opportunities to pursue for this area. I would like the opportunity to continue to serve.
