The Town of Poland has a rich history of industry and development. It is a uniquely patriotic and historical place.  The Memorial Day parade has a larger participation than cities much larger in size.  After the Vietnam War when patriotism wasn’t particularly in vogue this event was larger and probably more meaningful than any other local Memorial Day event.

It also has two historical markers.  One is for Gertrude Williams who was the first female Justice of the Peace in New York State .  The other is for Evelyn Crandall who was the first female Legislator in the Chautauqua County Legislature.  This seems somehow appropriate as this community seems to hold no prejudice or assume you can or can’t do anything.  People are simply judged for what they accomplish.

The Kennedy Pride group has had a remarkable impact on the town.  From the many American Flags that are proudly displayed throughout the township to the walking path in Hallquist Park their tireless work makes for a better place to live.  The Gazebo in the park is becoming a focal point for community events.  We are all very proud to be from Kennedy.

The Kennedy Fire Department is yet another example of people putting the needs of the community at a high level.  Without them we would not enjoy the security that comes from knowing someone who is extremely well trained will come to our rescue in literally minutes.

The Kennedy Library is well supported by the community through a spaghetti supper and a lot of volunteer time.  The people involved with the library should be very proud.

This is a time to reflect on the past and all the industry and economic activity that has brought our community to this point.  It is also a time to reflect what the future holds for our community.  We certainly have a great place to live and raise a family.  The rural nature of our culture instills values in our children that most of us think will make them ready to compete in the job market place anywhere.  We also need to think of ways to better our future.  Will we always be a farming community?  Should we consider trying to attract tourism as a second industry?  These issues and many more will be decided in the near future.  I would like the opportunity to help our area build its future.
